    Exponential Log-Periodic Antenna Design Using Improved Particle Swarm Optimization with Velocity Mutation

    An improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) method applied to the design of a new wideband log-periodic antenna (LPA) geometry is introduced. This new PSO variant, called PSO with velocity mutation (PSOvm), induces mutation on the velocities of those particles that cannot improve their position. The proposed LPA consists of wire dipoles with lengths and distances varied according to an exponential rule, which is defined by two specific parameters called length factor and spacing factor. The LPA is optimized for operation in 790-6000MHz frequency range, in order to cover the most usual wireless services in practice, and also to provide in this range the highest possible forward gain, gain flatness below 2dB, secondary lobe level below –20dB with respect to the main lobe peak, and standing wave ratio below 2. To demonstrate its superiority in terms of performance, PSOvm is compared to well-known optimization methods. The comparison is performed by applying all the methods on several test functions and also on the LPA optimization problem defined by the above-mentioned requirements. Furthermore, the radiation characteristics of the PSOvm-based LPA give prominence to the effectiveness of the proposed exponential geometry compared to the traditional Carrel’s geometry

    This paper studies a circular patch antenna which is fed by using a coaxial pin, which is a suitable antenna design for applications where small size is of importance. Such applications are wearable antenna designs. The main purpose of this paper is to design an antenna with wearable capabilities and adequate radiation characteristics for satellite communications and more specifically for the Iridium satellite constellation. The goals for the radiation characteristics of the antenna are the tuning of the antenna to 1.62GHz which is the Iridium's frequency, maximum boresight gain for this frequency, as well as circular polarization

    Ultra-Low-loss Reconfigurable Phase-shifting Metasurface in V band:A Multi-objective Optimization Approach

    Future generations of satellite and mobile communications at mm-wave frequencies require the use of low-loss and wideband phase-shifting components. Pixelated metasurfaces provide large design versatility and constitute an attractive solution for wave manipulation, such as shifting the phase of an incident wave. However, their design often implies the simultaneous tuning of a large number of geometrical parameters. This article employs an enhanced multi-objective optimization algorithm to design a dynamically reconfigurable metasurface providing ultra-low losses and linear phase response. The presented methodology can be easily employed for different objective functions or technologies, constituting a versatile design strategy for electromechanically reconfigurable devices based on pixelated metasurfaces. A prototype is fabricated based on the optimization outcome, achieving a phase shifter capable of providing a continuous phase shift up to 180∘ between 50 and 65 GHz. A piezo-electric actuator is used to dynamically adjust the phase shift with respect to the position of a metallic ground plane placed in front of the metasurface. A linear evolution of the phase w.r.t. the ground plane displacement is obtained while maintaining the losses around 1 dB for the whole frequency range

    Gated pipelined folding ADC based low power sensor for large-scale radiometric partial discharge monitoring

    Partial discharge is a well-established metric for condition assessment of high-voltage plant equipment. Traditional techniques for partial discharge detection involve physical connection of sensors to the device under observation, limiting sensors to monitoring of individual apparatus, and therefore, limiting coverage. Wireless measurement provides an attractive low-cost alternative. The measurement of the radiometric signal propagated from a partial discharge source allows for multiple plant items to be observed by a single sensor, without any physical connection to the plant. Moreover, the implementation of a large-scale wireless sensor network for radiometric monitoring facilitates a simple approach to high voltage fault diagnostics. However, accurate measurement typically requires fast data conversion rates to ensure accurate measurement of faults. The use of high-speed conversion requires continuous high-power dissipation, degrading sensor efficiency and increasing cost and complexity. Thus, we propose a radiometric sensor which utilizes a gated, pipelined, sample-and-hold based folding analogue-todigital converter structure that only samples when a signal is received, reducing the power consumption and increasing the efficiency of the sensor. A proof of concept circuit has been developed using discrete components to evaluate the performance and power consumption of the system

    Cross-Domain Polarity Models to Evaluate User eXperience in E-learning

    [EN] Virtual learning environments are growing in importance as fast as e-learning is becoming highly demanded by universities and students all over the world. This paper investigates how to automatically evaluate User eXperience in this domain using sentiment analysis techniques. For this purpose, a corpus with the opinions given by a total of 583 users (107 English speakers and 476 Spanish speakers) about three learning management systems in different courses has been built. All the collected opinions were manually labeled with polarity information (positive, negative or neutral) by three human annotators, both at the whole opinion and sentence levels. We have applied our state-of-the-art sentiment analysis models, trained with a corpus of a different semantic domain (a Twitter corpus), to study the use of cross-domain models for this task. Cross-domain models based on deep neural networks (convolutional neural networks, transformer encoders and attentional BLSTM models) have been tested. In order to contrast our results, three commercial systems for the same task (MeaningCloud, Microsoft Text Analytics and Google Cloud) were also tested. The obtained results are very promising and they give an insight to keep going the research of applying sentiment analysis tools on User eXperience evaluation.     Development of a web-based insulin decision aid for the elderly: usability barriers and guidelines

    In recent years, researchers have attempted to shift patient decision aids (PDAs) from paper-based to web-based to increase its accessibility. Insulin decision aids help diabetes patients, most of whom are elderly to make an informed decision to start insulin. However, the lack of usability guidelines applicable for such target group causes developers to struggle to answer the challenging question ‘How can such web service be made usable, and, ultimately, acceptable and accessible for elderly patients?’. Hence, the purpose of this study is to identify the common usability requirements that may facilitate good practices to empower elderly diabetes patients in utilizing a web-based insulin decision aid for their benefit. We set out an approach to use prototyping and retrospective think-aloud techniques to explore web usability barriers that elderly patients may encounter when using an insulin decision aid web site and use the feedback for improving the prototype. Usability requirements were captured iteratively through scoping, brainstorming, prototype, testing and evaluating. The study suggests that the insights from experts and users are equally important to assure the validity of the identified usability guidelines; they reflect the accessibility needs of the aging community while complementing the key requirements of an insulin decision aid. The study contributes to recommend web usability guidelines backed by a series of expert and user evaluations which could be a proactive resource to improve usability, acceptability and accessibility of online insulin decision aids for elderly with diabetes

    Rapid expansion of 5G affects a number of sectors, including vehicular communications relying on cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS). More specifically, in the context of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), a particular emphasis is placed on modern cellular V2X (C-V2X) technologies aiming to further improve road safety. This work originates from the detailed scope of the ongoing 5G-DRIVE research project promoting cooperation between the EU and China, with the aim of demonstrating IoV services that rely on vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. With the C-V2X approach serving as a point of departure, we analyze and describe a specific green light-optimized speed advisory (GLOSA) use case, for which we provide a detailed descriptive framework, a proposed architectural framework for trials, as well as specific KPIs for the joint assessment of trials between the EU and China. We also discuss the context for performance test procedures to be conducted as part of the intended trials.
